The week of November 17th to November 22nd, I finally concluded my nine research interviews. Each and every one of my interviewees gave me valuable insight and perspective into the field of obstetrics and gynecology and my ongoing original work. It was truly such an incredible experience to have the opportunity to interact with working obstetrician-gynecologists and professors of obstetrics and gynecology and learn about their professions. Some of my interviewees, such as Dr. Evelina Alcalen, an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern and the Supervisor for Residents at the OB-GYN Emergency Room at Parkland Hospital gave me a tour of the facility and the operating rooms, which was super fascinating to see. For my mentorship, I decided to contact Dr. Jon Ricks, M.D. due to his friendliness, professionalism, and proximity to school, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to secure a mentorship with Dr. Ricks. Although it is truly a missed opportunity that I will not be able to shadow under Dr. Ricks, I am grateful for the opportunity he has given me and all that I have learned from him in my interview. I have now decided to approach Dr. Heather Bellanger, my first interviewee, with the request of mentorship, and await a response from her soon. As the deadline approaches, I hope to find a mentor soon that is willing and able to teach me about the field of obstetrics and gynecology and allow me to explore in depth into my passions.
