I am incredibly elated to say I have finally completed my Original Work. My semester project this year is a 32-page research report titled "A Comprehensive Overview of the Placenta Accreta Spectrum and its Conservative and Surgical Treatments". In my paper, I discuss the definition, pathogenesis, and risk factors for placenta accreta, along with a detailed analysis of its conservative and surgical treatment methods. The conservative treatment methods outlined in my paper include intraoperative bilateral uterine artery ligation, prophylactic internal iliac artery balloon occlusion and uterine artery embolization, and methotrexate injection. The surgical treatment utilized is the Cesarean hysterectomy. This was an incredible and enriching learning experience as I got to independently explore the field of placenta accreta and understand the condition from the ground-up. Admittedly, it was also incredibly difficult to comprehend the vast medical jargon and concepts that were utilized in my review of the literature, but this process was equally exciting and challenged me as a student. I am excited to showcase my work at the Independent Study and Mentorship Research Showcase in January! Speaking of the Research Showcase, I have started passing out my invitations for the showcase to my friends, family, and teachers, so I hope they will attend. Lastly, I am looking forward to my first mentor visit with my mentor, Dr. Heather L. Bellanger of Plano Women's Healthcare in Plano, Texas. I am thrilled to speak with her about the shadowing experience that will take place for the next few months and learn all that I can from her expertise and guidance.
